At the University of Illinois in Chicago, the Health Research and Policy recently was given $2.3 million in a federal grant. This grant would allow experts to conduct research on the habits of young adults who use e-cigarettes. The research would also include the use of hookas, snus, and even other products within the tobacco industry.
The majority of smokers are younger adults as cigarette use looks attractive to them. It’s easy to get the wrong outlook at a young age and they often hold this outlook. Most young adults agree that electronic cigarettes are completely safe. Others are still buying discount cigarettes on the internet and still have not come across the electronic cigarette yet.
The study will look over the key habits of these adults like what was their first motivation to use an e-cigarette. Another is how they are used and what location do they use them in. These are just a few questions that will be presented to 230 young adults. The age range is anywhere from eighteen to thirty.
Every day, they will be keeping a record diary and writing in it about where/how they use tobacco products. Young adults are targeted highly by tobacco companies and most of the e-cigarette companies are advertising heavily, just to get their attention. This study will be supported by the National Cancer Institute.
We’ve seen that most young adults were turned onto e-cigarettes from their friends for the most part. They see a friend with an e-cig between their fingers, and wonder what it is. There’s vapor rising from the device and it almost looks like a real cigarette. Surprisingly, the smell is pleasant because it’s scented blueberry. Automatically, the young adult will begin questioning what it is, and where to get one. This is only if they are genuinely interested.
Family members can also rub off on young adults, although not as much. This is because they’ve seen their parents always trying to buy cheap cigarettes in the past, and the smell wasn’t very favorable. On top of that, they’d be breathing in second hand smoke when they were younger. This created memories that were negative and even though their parents switched to e-cigarettes, they wonder how they can be related.
On the other hand, some of them want to try out an e-cigarette, especially if they already smoke. Most likely, they will look for cheap cigarettes only when there is a sale, since they are so expensive these days. Their father, mother, aunt, or uncle may have a couple suggestions on where to buy them. Some e-cigarettes are purchased in town but that is highly unlikely, considering most are sold online. You will see a few stores that offer this though. We bet that in 2014, the market will be saturated, considering the rapid growth we see today. In the near future, you might even see cigarette stores go out of business. It’s almost like Blockbuster and Netflix, if you think about it. People want to experiment a new, safer way to smoke.
